So much irony surrounds this legendary song. It absolutely exudes WW2, in theme and, of course arrangement, and would seem to have been created exclusively for Vera; but it was written in Germany [of all places] after the war, where nobody thought much about her.
Vera may have waited a year or two before recording it out of empathy for the many British families adversely effected by the war, but she instantly knew that it was perfect for her the first time she heard it.
